There was a lot of publicity last week about the largest cruise ship in the world, Oasis of the Seas, which begins its first cruise on Saturday. We thought that since there was so much publicity you wouldn’t want more from us but no, we were taken to task by some readers for not mentioning it.
The publicity by the media has concentrated on its huge size (225,282 tons, 16 passenger decks) and that it can carry up to 6,200 passengers plus 2,000 crew. By any standards this is big. I’ve lived in smaller villages. The response by writers has been to ask whether it is too big.
Travel Destinations, Travel Rumblings
Have we lost our appetite for travelling to the USA? Figures released by the US government this week show that 1% fewer of us visited the country last year compared to 2009. What’s 1% you might say. That’s neither here nor there and can easily be made up. But the government also produced figures to show that over the last decade, the number of us travelling had dropped by 18% compared to the 1990’s. Only one other country, Japan had a higher drop over the decade.
Why might this be so?
Why would you run a B&B? Long hours; continuous cleaning; getting up early to prepare breakfasts; pandering to the whims of guests. It’s not something that appeals to me. In the UK we are using to seeing signs in seaside resorts and at farms. But it is becoming increasingly popular in America. Except that there it’s slightly different.
