A Centenery to Celebrate & 5 million travellers
This year sees the centenary of the introduction of the state pension. Before David Lloyd George introduced it in 1909, people were expected to support themselves in their retirement or be supported by their family. Nowadays we have 5 million pensioners who regularly, come recession or no, holiday. Large numbers collect their pensions abroad as the EU makes it possible to do so. Many may find that the exchange rate with the euro is making life tight for them and some have moved back to the UK.
But, I suspect, without the idea of the state pension and the development of pensions, there would be a lot fewer travellers and that eans good news for both our domestic tourism and, maybe apart from this year, overseas.
In an industry known for celebrating any event as an excuse to provide a special offer travel deal, I have yet to see it linked with the economic downturn to offer pensioners a 100 pounds discount off a holiday in celebration or anniversary trips to Criccieth or Llanystumdwy in North Wales where Lloyd George grew up.
