You might be surprised that York doesn’t have UNESCO World Heritage status. Given its Viking, Roman and church history, its city walls, York Minster and its remaining buildings you would have thought it was a shoe in. But no the city has never applied for the status before. This year it has and is one of 38 places in the UK that have submitted proposals to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. It is this body – or rather a panel of experts appointed by it – that will recommend which 2 names should be forwarded to UNESCO for their consideration. That doesn’t necessarily mean, however, that they will accept them on the nod.
A few months ago, CD-Traveller mentioned that Scot Rail would be introducing a slightly different version of its Club 55 deals (CD-Traveller 2nd May 2010). Now that we are in July, The offer has started so this is just to remind you what is on offer.
For both July and August you can travel anywhere in Scotland for just £22 for standard class and £27 for first class. This is the fare for a single ticket and you can just walk up to a ticket office on the day of travel and buy the ticket there and then. Because I look well over 55, I have yet to have to show evidence that I am indeed over 55 but it might be handy if you had something like a driving licence just in case.
Bear in mind though that there are lots of fares that will cost less than £22 so check first before you buy a ticket. But for those longer journeys, this can be a good deal.
Over the summer we have heard a lot about the decline in the numbers of people travelling to Spain and its islands. Nonetheless, Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canaries are still the most popular destinations for us when we go abroad. Given all year round warm weather, the Canaries are popular throughout the year. Now the Balearics, (Ibiza, Menorca and Majorca) are trying to convince us that they are winter destinations as well.
The three main Balearic islands had a 12% drop in visitors this year from the UK and more in the case of Ireland. Now they are pushing for more of us to visit the islands when special events are being held or just to enjoy the sports facilities that have been built there. Recently, Rafael Nadal was used to push that message to the travel trade.
