You will remember that Hastings Pier was devastated by a fire a last October. Piers are regarded with some nostalgia as things from Victorian times and our childhood. They don’t quite have the same number of followers as steam trains, but followers there are. So from the ashes, so to speak, an appeal is about to be launched to raise money to renovate the pier and bring it back into use. The sum required is relatively quite small at £800,000 and with the backers it has attracted, this should be attainable.
The CD-Traveller team typically heads to St Pancras and the area that surrounds King’s Cross to catch the Eurostar but a recent visit to N1, revealed that the area has become something of a destination in its own right.
Has it ever happened to you? You had a reserved seat. You have baggage that you’ve had to walk with across umpteen concourses. You find your seat on the train and there is someone sitting in it. You mention politely that they are in your seat and then you find they won’t move. What do you do? Complain to the guard (or whatever a guard is called on a train these days) or meekly accept it?
On holiday one of the things that many people like to do is shop. Airports have almost become retailers as well as places to catch flights and when we get to our destinations, there are shops to galore to pander to our whims. In some places it hardly seems as though you are abroad since the names often seem the same. There’s another Gucci, another Yves St Laurent,, another Hugo Boss.
Why go if you can already find it close to where you live. Otherwise the only reason is because it might be cheaper than back home.
So what might appeal would be something different. How about combining shopping and the opportunity to sightsee?
