Frommer’s Top 12
Each year, Frommer’s (the people who produce travel guidebooks and magazines) poll their readers to see what the destinations for 2010 would be. Primarily American vote for this so it does tend to reflect where Americans holiday but this year it includes the Scilly Isles. It doesn’t really say why they were voted for but just gives a potted tourism pitch. I’m not complaining but sometimes when surveys like this take place it would be nice to know what appeals to readers.
There are lots of reasons to visit the Scillies; the weather, the sandy beaches, the subtropical plants that grow there and, lets face it, the fact that you don’t have to change currency or speak another language. Frommer’s only warning is to book well ahead because accommodation is limited particulary in May when the gig races take place.
So what are the other selections by Frommer?
Tunisia leads the list with Frommer’s calling it a microcosm of North Africa’s charms. In Europe, Tunisia is quite a popular destination but to Americans it is not so widely known. Copenhagen and Hanoi are listed (there will be a longer story in CD-Traveller later this month about a trek through Vietnam that one of our writers did in October.) The next destination, Cuba, has almost been closed to American visitors but again this is a very popular destination for us. Abu Dhabi has featured in these pages before and with so many flight connections from the UK, this destination is one that combines heat, modern hotels, beaches and, once you leave the cities, the old Arabic lifestyle and culture.
Hawaii, Salta province in Argentina, Mexico City, Melbourne, Kerala in India (more on India later this month as well) are in the list as is a part of Florida I don’t know. For most of us, Florida is Orlando, Disneyworld, Universal and Busch Gardens but Frommer’s suggest the gulf beaches where the older style Florida is to be found.
