I spent quite a lot of time in Hanoi between 2006 and 2008. I love it and agree with your assessment, but hope you don't mind if I comment on your remark about French influence (by the way I am not French!). In fact there are many fine French style buildings around Hanoi that have been beautifully restored. I think it is to the credit of the Vietnamese that they have kept these fine examples of colonial architecture, given the way they were treated by the French colonial administration.
