Adventures on Route 66
According to research carried out for the Chicago and Illinois Tourist Office, 81% of us are looking for adventurous or meaningful holidays. Whether that is right or not, the tourist office has used it to create a competition using the iconic Route 66 as its appeal. The competition is to appoint an Illinois Route 66 Ambassador to highlight the some of the tourist attractions in the state to prospective UK visitors. All you have to do is give your contact details and say in up to 150 words why you should be the ambassador.
From the entries, five people will be shortlisted as a result of the voting that takes place from May 24th. Get your friends or anyone else to vote for you and by the close of voting on June 13th, one person will be chosen by the judges and be lucky enough to go to Chicago and travel along the route. But you have to work as well. Just like the recent completion for West Australia, you will have to write a blog on what you see and do. If you want to know more about Route 66 in Illinois, then www. Illinoisroute66.org will tell you about some of the things you can see and do along the route.
Route 66 runs through the width of Illinois and stretches from Chicago (where there are two brown tourism signs one saying Route 66 begins and the other, Route 66 ends) to the Missouri state border just outside St Louis. Nicknamed the Mother Road it seems synonymous with cars. There are car enthusiast shows along the whole of the route and in Illinois at least it gives its name to a car rally in the middle of June and a festival in September each year.
Through umpteen films, a TV series and songs, Route 66 has become part of US folklore. Now its on the World Monuments Fund list of 100 most endangered sites. It’s one on of those things, people say, you have to do before your die. To drive down Route 66. So how do you enter? Click on this link and it will take you to the competition.
