Another country to major on its past is Greece as typified by the slogan (the headline above) that they will be running on the advertising early next year. But as with any successful tourist destination Greece blends the old with the modern. With a history and the remains of buildings going back millennia, part of everyday life is that almost wherever you try and put up a new building or a pipeline you hit Greece’s cultural past. (That would make Channel 4’s Time Team envious!)
For the last week or so a volcano has been erupting in Chile. The ash cloud has risen high in the sky – now about 50,000 feet high – and is now swirling and travelling on the winds. Yet again, volcanic ash is disrupting flights.
It has been reported in the media that hotel prices rose considerably when airports had to close due to the ash in the atmosphere.( I have to say that the hotel I used gave me the same rate) During the six day closure some 10 million people were estimated to have been affected. That meant that hotel reservations were cancelled as well as new ones being booked at the last minute.
Prices certainly rose and cancellations at lower rates were probably replaced by walk-in rates which would have been higher so hotels in the affected areas shouldn’t have lost overall.
