Glasgow’s great, but it’s not capital worthy
According to Rough Guides, Glasgow should be the Scottish capital. The travel guide publishers have hailed the city as a “warmer less expensive alternative” to its east coast rival.

Glasgow
Sure there’s much to celebrate about Glasgow, home to the Scottish Opera, ballet, National Theatre and a buzzing nightlife scene (check out our article ‘Five reasons to go to Glasgow at http://www.cd-traveller.com/2010/10/25/five-reasons-to-go-to-glasgow/) , but does it really trump the true capital with its castles and world class festival? Given the choice, the CD-Traveller team would opt for Edinburgh every time…

Yes indeed, Glasgow. Speaking as a ‘Burgher’ who spent five years living in Hyndland,( ‘The Weegie West End’) I feel qualified to comment.
I was enjoying an afternoon repast at Mrs Cranston’s Tearooms when a waitress dropped a knife, embedding it in my leg. “Madam!” I exclaimed. “A stabbing is to be expected in Buchanan Street at two, but in the a.m., not the p.m.!”
Nothing beats being assaulted by a jakie (inebriated fellow) in George Square in broad daylight. then again, it was outside the City Chambers (council HQ) so it may have been an elected representative.
Then there’s the socially enlightening experience of an ‘Old Firm’ match, when ‘public transport’ and ‘public toilet’ become confused in the minds of the soccer faithful.
Not that I’m biased. A lion escaped from Edinburgh Zoo; ate a baby and terrorised the neighbourhood, until a visiting Glaswegian grappled it to the ground, and strangled it with his bare hands. The Edinburgh Evening News reported “Merciless Glasgow Thug Kills Domestic Pet”.
In fairness, Kelvingrove Art Gallery is quite nice.
