The winter sports business has seen fewer skiers on the slope over the last few years (there were 911,000 UK skiers on the piste last season compared to 1.2 million in 2007/8) but you could have fooled me if the turn out the 2011 Ski & Snowboard Show was anything to go by.
The annual show – back at Earls Court after 17 years at Olympia – was packed. Powder veterans and virgins alike were able to hang out with Jenny Jones – the GB pro snowboarder and three-times X Games Gold medallist – snap up new gear at discounted prices (we loved the glamorous thermals from Blingypiste star allowing you to shine off piste as well as on), visit their favourite resort and ski areas to see what’s new for the winter season and watch some of the world’s top snowboarders show off their freestyle skills on the 50ft-high Trespass Hip Kicker.
There was also live music, fashion shows, chiropractors from Putney Chiropractics offering complimentary spinal checks and coaches from the Warren Smith Ski Academy giving free demonstrations of key exercises we should all be doing before we hit the slopes.
Or if we hit the slopes. I’m not sure I can justify a skiing break (the most expensive of holidays) in the current economic climate. However while the jury is out on whether I will be signing up for snowtime this season, what I can tell you is this: I certainly enjoyed showtime.
