Just as Europe has capitals of culture; this year, Istanbul, Essen and Pecs so the Arab world highlights a city each year. This year it is Alexandria in Egypt, a city which is more well known than visited by British and Irish tourists. It is known as where Cleopatra had her palace, where the great lighthouse was one of the wonders of the world and home of the ancient world’s largest library. Founded and named after Alexander the Great, its glory days ended centuries ago as Cairo gradually became the capital.
Today it is where Egyptian city people go for the holiday. The days when the British and Europeans seem to take over the city have gone. Today Europeans visit Cairo and Luxor or go to the Red Sea resorts.
In case you were unaware, we are in the middle of National Cruise Week. Around my way you would have been hard pressed to notice. The travel industry doesn’t even have a big consumer show celebrating cruising. That is held in March (next year 27-28 March at Olympia in London. This year it was at Excel in London last March ). In the local travel agents (supposedly 2000 are involved) I saw no great displays either just the usual Caribbean or Mediterranean cruise cards posted in windows. Yet 1.5 million of us go on cruising; many more than go skiing for example.
The signs are unmistakable. It’s wet, windy and dark at four o clock so it must be time to head abroad and bask in some winter sun. If the daily grind is getting you down and you need to recharge your batteries in a tropical paradise, may we suggest Barbados?
