In London yesterday, just a few days before the first match was the South African Minister for Tourism, Marthinus Van Schalkwyk. You would have thought he would be at home and welcoming visitors heading to the most high profile sporting piece of tourism that South Africa has held. But no, he was here addressing about 70 journalists and members of the travel community.
Why?
One reason was to emphasise that tourism was so important to the developing world and that after the World Cup was over, a marketing campaign would begin over here to encourage us to visit South Africa. They want to make it clear that South Africa wants visitors at any time of the year and the World Cup lasts for just a month.

Half Term Destinations

Seemingly around faster than ever, half term is upon us and it usually throws up some surprises as to what destinations we prefer to go to.
But no this year, the choice appears to be pretty similar to those summer places we chose. Last summer you might remember we shunned Spain and many other places in the eurozone and opted for Egypt and Turkey in much greater numbers. Still Spain was the top destination. This time we have done the same. A Spanish destination is top but there have been lots more people heading away to Sharm El Sheikh and Dalaman.

Compensation for the Weather

The last week has brought enough disruption to travellers that makes some people wonder whether the effort is worthwhile. Holidaymakers planning to get away for Christmas have been hit by the troubles at Eurostar as well as by the impact of the snow. This time the snow has been widespread with airports like Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and Aberdeen being closed for a time as well as overseas airports such as Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf. Snow has been recorded in Corsica and Venice, Madrid and the beach at San Sebastian. You have probably seen pictures of how bad it was in the north east of the United States.
So with so much disruption can you make a claim?
