London’s calling

I am going to come out and say it: London is the coolest capital in the world!

Sure it can be dirty, claustrophobic and costly –  but there’s cornucopia of cultural wealth and as last week’s fabulous flotilla along the Thames and Diamond Jubilee concert in Buckingham Palace and the impending Olympic Games prove: this sumer there is only one place to be.

Little wonder then that so many BBC staffers have refused to up sticks from London and make the move to Manchester to the corporation’s new headquarters. I have nothing against Manchester – my Grandparents were born there and I still have family living in the area – but, bottom line, it’s not London.

The BBC’s director-general, Mark Thompson seems surprised that so many of his staff aren’t waving their Union Jack flags in the air about schlepping north to Salford. I and almost every Londoner I have spoken to about this, aren’t surprised in the slightest. At the end of the day, London is akin to coffee: it gets in your bloodstream, picks you up and leaves you wanting more…
