What’s on in Italy
Asti: Palio di Asti. Held on September 3rd, the horse race has twenty-one riders and is preceded by a parade of well over 1,000 people. Try a “bönet”, which is a chocolate pudding, with almond cookies all soaked in the local, Asti Spumante.
Bolzano, Bolzano Danza – the 28th International festival of dance and performance. 16-28th July.
Florence, Sargent and the American Impressionists is at the Palazzo Strozzi unil 15th July.
Rome. Lux in Arcana. 100 documents from the Vatican archive are on display at the Capitoline Museum until 9th September.
Sienna: Palio Horse Race, July 2nd and August 16th. First run in 1656, the Palio honours an apparition of the Virgin Mary. As well as a horse race there is an historical parade with participants in medieval costumes which date back to the fifteenth century.
Stresa, 51st Music Festival, the jazz concerts run from July 20-22; Musical Meditations goes from July 27-August 3 and final section, Looking Ahead, is from August 25-September 8.
Torre de Lago: 58th Puccini Festival. Held in an outdoor theatre (a modern amphitheatre,) this festival was begun by the man himself in 1930. Easily reached by those flying into the airport at Pisa.
Taormina Arts Festival takes place during July and August in Sicily. Most events take place at the Greek theatre, the Teatro Antico. The jazz festival runs from 17-22nd July.
Trapani, Stragusto Street Food Festival. 20-22nd July. This annual event in Sicily runs from 7pm until midnight each day. As well as all the food available there is music and entertainment.
Venice: Festival of the Redentore, July 14/15th. First held in 1577 to give thanks for deliverance from the plague, it combines a religious ceremony, a huge firework display on the Saturday night and a series of gondola races.
Venice: Historical Regatta September 2nd. dating back about 700 years, the regatta combines four races down the Grand Canal with a water pageant. The pageant has 16th century-style boats with gondoliers in period costume travelling up the Grand Canal in a parade.
Venice: 69th Film Festival. Held on the Lido from 28th August till the 8th September, thi is one of the triendiest dates in the film festival calendar.
Verona: International Opera Festival: June 22nd-September 6th. Six operas are scheduled including the perennial Tosca all of which take place in the Roman amphitheatre that dates back about 2000 years. Choose between padded chairs or stone seats! The new opera museum, AMO, opened on June 23.
