Oscar nominated Skyfall encourages Istanbul travel

Nominated for five Oscars, including best original song by Adele, Skyfall is set to be the most popular James Bond film so far. Filmed in Istanbul, the opening scenes of the film are widely considered the best ever of any Bond film.

The latest 007 adventure has also put a spotlight on the ancient city of Istanbul where the opening scenes were filmed, with trips to Turkey’s capital up 76 per cent on last year, according to UK tour operator Thomas Cook. City breaks searches are also up 50 per cent, with Turkey searches in general up 56 per cent as sun seekers try and escape the big freeze and seek out warmer climates.

One of the popular destinations for Bond films (From Russia, With Love and The World is Not Enough were also filmed here), Istanbul straddles two continents, offering an intoxicating blend of east and west and is often described as the gateway to the orient.
