We’ve mentioned before the train deals available to those over 55. Many other deals are dependent on you being a senior, under 25, having a railcard or both. Here comes an offer from London Midland that provides a 50% discount for anyone regardless of age.

From 1st August to 5th September you can travel anywhere on the London Midland network which extends from London to Liverpool, from Hereford via Worcester to Birmingham and from Shrewsbury to Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa. That’s pretty much the whole of the West Midlands area, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Northants, and Buckinghamshire.

You can combine them to get even better fares if you have a railcard.

On their website, it says that these fares can be booked as from tomorrow. They seem to be there now.
As with all offers, there are some rules. Firstly, the tickets can only be used at off-peak times (but who wants to travel with commuters when we are out the day and I certainly found some fares in peak times) and they have to be booked online.

In the light of the difficulty of finding the cheap air tickets as advertised, do these exist?

I had no trouble in getting a ticket from London to Lichfield and back £12 next week. Friday can be a rather expensive day to travel but a London to Birmingham fare was available for £12 as well. I couldn’t find a Friday fare of £15.25 as advertised from Birmingham to Liverpool. The best I could find was £18 but I did get a cracking fare from London to Stoke-on-Trent for £16. As often is the case, it cost £22 going the opposite way.

Be aware of one thing. If London Midland isn’t the main train line on a route (Virgin is the main one on the London to Stoke-on-Trent/ Birmingham run) then these fares are for slower trains. It can take you twice as long to get to your destination on LM. The cheapest equivalent I could find on Virgin was £47 return for the days I checked.

So if you are in a hurry, you may have a problem traveling on some LM routes. If not, and on a day out do you really need to rush, then here’s a bargain you should look at.
