The lure of New York

The lure of New York

At the World Travel Market, the USA unveiled a new logo. It is made up of a series of lightly coloured dots or stars that form the initials of the country. It is a soft and slightly woolly image that doesn’t seem to fit. And especially not with New York which bristles with brashness, energy and a disdain for under achievement.

American ‘culture’ and British visitors

CD-Traveller mentioned a little while ago that British visitors were returning to the US after declining numbers over the last few years. One of the reasons we go is for the appeal of its heritage, according to a study recently released by their government.

You might have been misled over the last few days if you saw stories about the Statue of Liberty closing. It’s doing no such thing. What is happening is that the interior of the statue will close so that new lifts can be installed and the fire standards will be upgraded.

Dining in Union Square

New York is awash with restaurants. And delis. And take-aways. You’re spoilt for choice. Even if you don’t go into any of the stores you can still get food on the street corners from hot-dog vendors and pretzel sellers. So it’s nice, once-in-a-while, to have something different.

It’s Nice to Feel Wanted.
By: Adrian | June 25, 2010 – 11:44 am | No Comment
It’s Nice to Feel Wanted.

Last week it was the North Carolinians who named UK visitors as the ones they were targeting. They were visiting travel agents urging them to push North Carolina with its two direct links to the state (Gatwick-Charlotte and Heathrow to Raleigh-Durham) as the place British visitors should holiday in.
Now New York has followed with a worldwide campaign called “See More, Be More. This is New York City”. Not the snappiest of headlines but it is supposed to “reflect the feeling of personal transformation that lingers long after a trip to NY ends,” according to the creative head of NYC & Company, Willy Wong. Or to put it another way, good holiday memories.

Eating Out Discounts to Attract Visitors

At this time of year a lot of destinations don’t bother to try and attract tourists. They think that people are only interested in skiing or winter sun breaks. We have the consumer travel shows like Destinations and the Holiday Shows but not a lot more than that.
But that doesn’t apply if you are New York.
They have another way to entice you to visit their city during January and February. We are one week into what is called the NYC Restaurant Week

Seeing in the New Year

Seeing in the New Year

New Year’s Eve and the first day of the New Year have become tourist attractions in their own right. Television has magnified it by capturing the moment when the New Year begins in a number of places. Around lunchtime on New Years Eve, the new year is heralded in Sydney in Australia with a huge firework display and winds down about 24 hours later with the display from Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In between, there is the traditional gathering in London at Trafalgar Square, in Princes Street in Edinburgh, the swinging of fireballs in Stonehaven near Aberdeen (quite a sight if you’ve never seen it) and the counting in of the new year in Times Square in New York. As well as that a large number of towns and cities such as Nottingham and Carlisle will have firework displays.

BA and the Top 10 Destinations of 2010

BA and the Top 10 Destinations of 2010

British Airways has announced its list of 10 destinations that it thinks will influence you to decide where to go on your holidays next year. In any list like this you have to bear a couple of things in mind, the first being that BA flies to all the destinations it suggests and therefore that may have influenced the list. Secondly it is subjective. We don’t know how these places got on the list. Probably some “expert” decided or it coincided with a new or improved service to that destination by BA. I could be completely wrong there but, as I said, who knows. Still it is interesting to se whether our ideas match those of BA.

The list is Cape Town, Istanbul, Las Vegas, Vancouver, Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Dubrovnik, New York, Stockholm, the Maldives and Delhi.
