The Great Gallery, Wallace Collection

Sometimes helping others has its rewards. CHTAEF – Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Educational Foundation raises money to put Caribbean students into education where they learn about tourism, travel and hospitality. It’s not a big charity but it manages to fund between 45 and 50 students a year to study. If thestudents come to the UK, then they can go to Bournemouth University – one of the best in the country for tourism studies. In this, their silver jubilee year, they can show that they have managed to raise $1.5 million for education.

For the first time ever they are holding a fundraising event in our countries. They’ve chosen the Wallace Collection to host the event this coming March 10th. I know it’s a bit short notice but if any of you are interested then click here. A group of you might fancy a table but you can go on your own as well.

A silent auction (you just a bid on the relevant prize by adding your name to a list at the price you’re prepared to pay. You may be lucky or you may be trumped.) Then there is the more usual auction. There will be hotel offers including some that you definitely say were one in a million breaks such as staying on Richard Branson’s island. You could also bid for a signed pair of Usain Bolt’s golden running shoes or a cricket bat signed by the 2008 winning West Indian team.

The event is being backed by BA, Virgin Atlantic (rivalry gone for the evening as both support better training for the people who can make your holiday more special to you) and Virgin Holidays to name a few.

But don’t these things go for silly money you might be asking, a question I put to Tom Pas, the chairman of the board of trustees of CHTAEF? He says that in the silent auction generally prizes go for no more than 60 per cent of the value. And the value will be listed on the bidding sheet. In some cases, prizes go for a lot less particularly if it is hotel accommodation and you have to buy the flights.
So if you fancy a great break, a good night out in a splendid location, the Wallace is for you.

No, not on clothes or beds or sofas. I’m talking about the holiday sales. At the moment airlines, hotels, travel agents and tour operators have them in abundance. But will they make us book?

No, not on clothes or beds or sofas. I’m talking about the holiday sales. There are now sales on flights by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines. And there is the Ryanair £9.99 sale that seems always to be on!
TUI (owners of Thomson and First Choice) also has a sale which guarantees a 10% discount when you book Thomson online and £200 on Thomson summer holidays departing from London. First Choice has a similar sale to Thomson but also has deals on remaining winter holidays with up to £300 off. Its upmarket brand, Hayes & Jarvis has discounts of up to £1,500 per couple
Disneyland Paris is offering 30% discounts and Thomas Cook is saying it has 25% off cruises and up to £400 off summer holidays. The same applies to the Airtours and Direct Holidays brands of Thomas Cook as well. Trailfinders also have a cruise sale as does P&O which is promoting its 175th anniversary sale.
Virgin Holidays says that it is offering £200 off holidays booked to Florida in the school holidays and says on others you can save up to 40%. Onthebeach.com has deals with up to 50% off if you book by the end of the year and Cosmos is saying it will give free room upgrades.
Jet2 Holidays is offering an extra £100 off per booking whilst Balkan Holidays has deals of up to £320 per couple for the summer. Travel Republic has discounts of up to 35% and The Co-operative Travel is also majoring on a £400 discount. Shearings has an early booking offer whilst James Villa Holidays is only giving free travel insurance and car hire. Butlins are offering a third off in school holidays and Warner Hotels have a sale until the end of January.
You could almost say who isn’t having one. This is a crucial time for the industry and instead of the free child offers and upgrades that used to be the mainstay of the post-Christmas booking frenzy, tour operators and travel agents are working harder than ever to persuade you to book and buy now. A sure sign of how successful they have been will be how long the sales last. And how big the discounts grow!

Remember voting for which travel companies you thought were the best in the British Travel Awards? Altogether, 700,000 votes were received. Last Wednesday the winners were announced.

Remember voting for which travel companies you thought were the best in the British Travel Awards? Altogether, 700,000 votes were received. Last Wednesday the winners were announced.
The best city break destination was awarded to New York with Barcelona and Paris as the runners-up. Australia was voted to be the best country to visit pipping Spain and Italy whereas Florida – that major British favourite – got the nod as best US state to visit.
St Moritz in Switzerland was voted best European ski destination over two French contenders, Val d’Isere and Chamonix while Aspen in Colorado beat Whistler and Lake Tahoe in the North American award.
Disneyland was the best theme park worldwide and Alton Towers won the UK honour over Legoland and Thorpe Park.
Shearings was voted best domestic holiday company of the year whilst Parkdean won the best holiday park operator and Hoseasons was best waterways operator. The Eden Project in Corwall was best UK leisure attraction and Edinburgh Castle was best heritage attraction. Staying with the domestic awards, Cornwall was voted best holiday county and St Ives was the best seaside town over Whitby and Bournemouth.
It won’t surprise many of you that the perennial winner, Emirates , has done it again in being named best airline and it also wins for best first class/business airline. Virgin Atlantic was the best economy class airline and was also the best airline for customer service.
The Manchester Airports Group must be pretty happy in that Manchester won the best major airport category and East Midlands (which they also operate) was UK airport of the year and the best regional airport as well.
Amongst the tour operator categories, the two biggies did well with Thomson getting 18 awards and Thomas Cook, 15. Virgin also won 15 awards across both the airline and Virgin Holidays. The BTA has been running for six years and every year one company has won a category every single time. It did it again this year so congratulations to the Post Office for best provider of travel insurance. You certainly do like them! And thank you from the organisers and CD-Traveller for all your votes. Shortly we will be able to reveal which of you has won the prizes on offer. The lucky winners are still being contacted about their prizes.

Looking out of the window at the large dollop of snow that has fallen overnight, it is easy to think of warmer parts of the world and getting away from the cold and bleak view I see. Where to go is one issue but who I go with is another.

You could be forgiven for thinking, after seeing the Which? Holiday report on tour operators that you should avoid the big companies like Thomson, First Choice, Thomas Cook, Cosmos and Virgin because they haven’t done very well in the report.

You would be wrong.

This is not to say that the survey is wrong. The Consumers Association, (CA), publishers of the different Which? Reports has strict and solid research techniques and knowledge. No the problem is the sample. It is drawn from members of the CA which is largely upmarket, middle class. These are not the sort of people who tend to book package holidays with the large tour operators so the number of people surveyed who have holidayed with those I mentioned earlier is proportionately much lower. Low response means a few positive or negative responses can affect results.

The whole survey is only 4,507 responders so the people responding per tour operator could be low. A minimum of only 30 have to reply for each tour operator to be included. Thirdly, smaller tour operators like VFB, which came top (and congratulations to them), move comparatively small numbers of people compared to the millions moved by the big companies. It is always easier to get better customer satisfaction ratings from smaller companies than larger ones and that applies to whichever industry you survey. And to be fair, Rochelle Turner, head of research at the CA said that it might be harder to provide the attention to detail in big companies. Finally it should be said that the tour operators interview people during their holiday. The CA interviewed people after they had returned home and, in some cases, holidays could have been quite a long time ago. Answers may vary as time elapses.

I should make an admission. I have worked with most of the big tour operators over the years on their customer satisfaction programmes so I know how much time effort and money goes in to it and the responses they make to problems.

The big tour operators try as hard as the little ones to make your holidays as enjoyable as they can. And if there is a problem, they will try, by and large, to resolve it. I cannot remember, over the last 10 or so years, of any of the biggest tour operators ever being voted number 1. And I wouldn’t expect them to in any survey of CA members

This is the time of the year when the National Customer Service Awards are announced. In any industry service is important. Good service leads to satisfaction. Satisfaction can lead to loyalty and repeat business. No customer likes being ill treated, ignored, patronised or fobbed off with meaningless official waffle so awards that support good service are welcome. But travel and tourism doesn’t seem to have done to well in this year’s awards. Is that because they didn’t enter or they did, but weren’t shortlisted for the final?

Before looking at that subject, I should congratulate those from travel and tourism who did walk off with trophies. Butlins were awarded Best Service Employer of the Year and Pauline Wilson from Virgin Holidays was named Customer Service Manager of the Year. Manchester Airport, Chiltern Railways, Cross Country and the National Maritime Museum all made the shortlist but were pipped at the last moment. In the case of Manchester Airport they lost out in two categories and the Group (which also owns East Midlands and Humberside airports) lost out as well.

Last year 13 different companies related to travel and tourism were shortlisted so the number has halved. As I said earlier, this could be because companies decided not to enter. But last year there was a category for Customer Service Team of the Year for Leisure & Tourism and not this year. There was also a similar award for airlines, transport and distribution which failed to survive into 2009. So it could be that travel and tourism companies saw little reason to enter.

This week there was the news story about the person who requested a complaint form from the guard on a train. As the journey ended, the guard came over the tannoy apologising for not managing to get the form to the passenger because overcrowding made it difficult to get through the train! Enough said. An attempt at customer service defeated by the very reason for it.

Customer service needs rewarding in whichever industry it is in.

Last night the winners were announced of the British Travel Awards. CD-Traveller is one of the sponsors because these are the only awards where you, the traveller and holidaymaker, can vote. So it’s not just the travel industry patting itself on the back. And over 100,000 of you voted so our thanks, and those of the organisers, for taking the time to vote.

By voting you could also win but those prizes will be announced a bit later.

So for now, these are some of the winners.

You chose First Choice as the best short haul tour operator and Virgin Holidays as the best long haul one. Your best airport in the UK was Manchester Airport and overseas, Singapore. The best UK destination was Cornwall and your favourite country to visit was the USA. Your favourite citybreak destination was Barcelona and you thought that Dubai was the best tourist board. American Airlines was voted the best airline and Easyjet, the best no-frills airline. The best cruise company was Cunard and the best ferry operator, P & O. Shearings were voted the best tour operator for escorted tours and Thomson was voted the best in a number of categories including all-inclusive, best to the Middle East and the Med.

For the full list go to www.britishtravelawards.com/tip_awbf.php

Just a reminder. The survey about your future travel thoughts is open until November 30th. We’ll send you a reminder a little closer to the time as well but you if you haven’t filled it in you can do so by going to www.britishtravelawards.com/tip_rp.php.

And thanks once again for voting. As soon as the winners amongst the voters is known, we’ll let you know.

You remember the Virgin Holidays survey I mentioned a day or so ago? Apart from discussing these depressives it provided another odd result. Three quarters of those that responded (Virgin asked 4500 people and we don’t know how many responded) said they found it easy to recall holidays by seeking out smells.
And surprise, surprise, Virgin Holidays will flog you a bottle of the smell to help you recapture those memories. They are only available on their website for a short time. Sounds like a bit of a PR stunt to me.
Now as some of you might recall, my last break was a few days in Scotland, one of which was spent in a hotel that, according to one guest, had a problem with the drains.
Do I really want Eau de Drain to remind me of a hotel that was perfectly adequate in every other respect? (and I didn’t smell it anyway) Do I want to be reminded of the beach by Eau de Low Tide or Eau de Suntan Lotion? Or of Eau de Hot Dog?
Apparently, Virgin will flog you Cologne de Casbah to remind you of those happy North African holidays.
The one I definitely don’t want is Eau de Aeroplane Food and Essence de Sweaty Passenger!

Yes that seems to be the case according to some research commissioned by Virgin Holidays. They say that 18% of us , almost one in five, start getting depressed even before we take the return flight home. There you are, on the last day of your holiday; the last day you can enjoy yourself by doing something you enjoyed again or doing that final shop and instead a load of us are getting too ratty and upset to enjoy it.
The last day can be bad enough as it is. With long check-in times, trying to pack all that holiday tat that seemed a good idea at the time but now just seems a waste of money and checking out leaving your luggage at the mercy of a locked room for most of the day.
And to top it all off we then sit down to enjoy ourselves by getting depressed! Still on the plus side, 82% don’t get depressed and are, presumably, enjoying the last day to the hilt.
Maybe those 18% are just those who are natural moaners, you know the sort who with glorious sunshine and not a cloud in the sky will turn around to you and say, “ah yes, but it’ll rain this afternoon.”
When I go on holiday, I am going to make sure that there are never more than three people near me and that way I’ll never meet the moaner who will put me off my last day!
